The Effects of a Heatwave

Phew... when it's really hot outside, I suffer, you know! I don't sweat like you humans do. To cool down, I pant... but sometimes, that's just not enough. When the sun is blazing, I can get heatstroke ... and that's super dangerous for me. My heart races, I feel weak, I tremble… and if no one helps me, it can get really serious. So please, keep a close eye on me during hot weather.

When I'm dehydrated, I feel sluggish, my nose gets dry, I pant like crazy, and I might even throw up. It's no fun at all. It's even harder for me if I'm older, a bit chubby, or if I already have health problems. I need to have fresh water available all the time, and I should be resting in the shade during the hottest parts of the day.

Oh, and my poor paws! Walking on burning hot pavement is like you stepping barefoot on a stove. Can you imagine that? It can burn me, make me limp, and make me not want to go out at all. So please, take me for walks early in the morning or late in the evening, and check the ground with your hand before we go.

When I get too hot, I can also feel stressed, grumpy, or just really tired. Sometimes, I don’t even understand what’s going on anymore. So please, never leave me alone in the car during summer — not even for “just a few minutes.” Give me a shady spot, some fresh air, cool water, and lots of love. I’m counting on you to keep me safe! 🐶☀️💧
